Stakeholders in the energy sector have stressed the need to
implement sustainable practices in the industry in order to eradicate poverty.
This was emphasised during an interactive session at the First Bank Sustainability Centre located at the Lagos Business School (LBS).
In attendance were members of staff of First Bank Nigeria
Limited, representatives from the energy sector as well as the extractive
industry.
Companies represented were shell Petroleum Development corporation,(SPDC), Lafarge Cement, amongst others.
Speaking
at the forum, guest lecturer from the University of Edinburgh Business School,
Mr. Kenneth Amaechi said noted that businesses should be responsible to impact
on the value chain, saying that the major issue should be to sustain
development. This, he argued would immensely help to alleviate poverty.
He also
urged businesses to always collaborate with non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) and partake more in social responsible deeds.
Amaechi
said: “The whole idea is to get sustainable thinking business practices and by
sustainability here, we mean corporate social and environmental concerns into
the decision for long term growth and opportunities.
“It is
about addressing some of the temporary challenges in a way that it would lead
to short term and long term sustainability.”
He
advised companies to improve on their implementation strategies, saying:
“Companies should contextualise their strategies to think of sustainability not
from a European or American prospective but what it means for Nigerian
companies and how they can use sustainability as a way to address local
challenges.”
On his
part, relating sustainability practices to development in Nigeria, Dr. Bongo
Adi of the LBS said building sustainable infrastructure is vastly connected to
development.
He also
urged companies to set structures that would sustain through future generations
and also ensure they are environmentally friendly.
